Today, many people speak about the measures to be taken to ensure safety of women in India. A few of them went to the extent of stating that the safety of the women depends on what she wears, what company she keeps.
There were many debates that took place when issues on women safety were reported in the news channels and that was all the impact it created. We, as a nation speak and work towards greater visions but the irony is that the safety of women is only talked about and hardly worked upon.
When the issue of women’s safety was on the rise, there were a couple of solutions that arose (pepper spray, self-defense training etc.) which were just short-term fixes to a glaring problem. In my personal opinion, before imparting knowledge on mathematics, physics or chemistry, we should teach our children that a women is not an object but a fellow human being and has to be treated with respect.
All is not lost yet; a few cities in our country have come up with solutions to ensure safe travel of women. For e.g. the SHE Shuttle Services started in Hyderabad. They are a free service running 5 days/week for women working in the IT Corridor. Yes. You heard that right! There is also a dedicated control desk deployed at the Cyberabad Police control room that monitors the shuttles.
We are marching towards scaling new milestones in ensuring women’s safety but the required pace is not generated based on the gravity of the issue. We require more government initiatives to be deployed in many more cities in our country. Our solutions should majorly focus on preventing the issue rather than providing a cure for the incident.
As the saying goes, “Prevention is always better than the Cure”. Let’s start working on creating a safer and smarter society!
